"Photovoltaic + Catchment Irrigation + Ecological Restoration" Helps Yunnan Green and Low-Carbon Cyclic Development

The reporter was informed that its "ecological restoration + photovoltaic" demonstration project has created a new development model that combines ecological restoration of rocky desertification with photovoltaic power generation in the country-"photovoltaic + water harvesting + ecological restoration", helping Yunnan's green and low-carbon circular development.

  Yunnan Province is located on a plateau, with long sunshine hours and sufficient sunlight, which has unique advantages in the development of solar photovoltaic power generation. At the same time, Yunnan Province is also one of the most severely rocky desertification provinces in the country. The restoration and reconstruction of ecologically fragile regional ecosystems has become one of the key issues for the province's green and sustainable development.

      Zhao Dong, director of the Central Yunnan Representative Office of SPIC Yunnan International, introduced that, as a central enterprise entering Yunnan, SPIC Yunnan International will help Yunnan Province build a "green energy brand" and organically integrate photovoltaic power generation projects with ecological restoration of the rocky desertification area in Yunnan. The Dongchuan District of Kunming City, where the problem of rocky desertification is more prominent, has built the country's first "photovoltaic power generation + water harvesting irrigation + ecological restoration" miniature model (1.04MW) project.

  It is reported that the demonstration project was completed and put into use in 2020, with a total installed capacity of 1.0297 MW, which can provide 1.316 million kilowatt-hours of clean electric energy per year, and realize the self-sufficiency and surplus electricity utilization "eco-energy cycle" system.
             Zhao Dong said, “In addition to the clean energy brought by photovoltaic power generation, the economic value of this project is more importantly the restoration of the ecology and the reuse of land, which will help the rocky desertification area to improve the level of ecological health and achieve regional ecological health and coordination. The multiple development goals of development and land intensification form an engineering paradigm that can be replicated, promoted, and operated."


        Fan Shuhao, the operation manager of the Dongchuan “Ecological Restoration + Photovoltaic” demonstration project, introduced that this project is composed of five major system projects including photovoltaic panels for rainwater harvesting, water cellar storage, dry season drip irrigation, zoning green plants (cultivation), and green power generation. Photovoltaic components such as sinks and diversion pipes collect rainwater. The total annual water storage capacity of its water cellars and high-level pools can reach more than 700 cubic meters. In the dry season, it can provide "life-saving water" for the regional ecosystem through the drip irrigation system covering the whole site.

       In addition, the project makes full use of the photovoltaic array’s wind-resistance, sand-fixing, shading and humidification effects, planting drought-tolerant plants and crops according to local conditions, and trying to breed plateau geese. The photovoltaic array can reduce evaporation, retain water and store water while maintaining vegetation growth. The basic light needed to accelerate the natural succession of plant communities and the process of ecological restoration, and promote soil improvement and local microclimate improvement.
       It is worth mentioning that the 5G weather station set up under the photovoltaic panel can automatically monitor and collect environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and provide data for the dry season drip irrigation system. Managers can realize automatic and intelligent management through mobile phone operations.

  At present, with the project as the basis and model, the 280MW ecological treatment and restoration photovoltaic project in Dongchuan District with a total investment of about 1.2 billion yuan is in full swing. Zhao Dong said that after the completion of the project, it can provide 463 million kWh of clean electricity every year. Compared with coal-fired power plants, the project can save 145,800 tons of standard coal each year, reduce the emission of more than 900 tons of air pollutants, and effectively produce carbon sequestration. The oxygen effect promotes the development of Yunnan’s green and low-carbon cycle and contributes to the realization of the "dual-carbon goal". (Finish)
